Brothers Martyn and Paul Carnell are The Car People. They sold their previous motor franchise in 1997 and started afresh in 1999 with a car supermarket in Wakefield. The company says it sold more than 6,000 cars last year, all less than five years old, and in September opened a second site in Manchester. The firm pays its salesmen a flat commission on each car sold regardless of its value, which helps to ensure that customers are not pressed into buying more expensive models. Sales have grown 88% a year from an annualised £7.5m in 2000 to £49.6m in 2003.
