McDonald’s, Pret A Manger and First Great Western provide their customers with wireless internet access thanks to this St Albans company. The Cloud operates 22,000 wireless access points at 9,000 European locations, and claims that its infrastructure supports up to 1.5m users connecting to the internet every month. Its wireless network is also used by football stadiums such as Manchester United’s and Arsenal’s so that journalists can access the web while reporting on matches. The company received a cash injection of €21m in 2007, enabling it to acquire a German wi-fi business. Led by chief executive Steve Nicholson, the firm has raised its sales 113% a year from £1.6m in 2005 to £15.9m in 2008, when it reported a loss.
