Evolving from a shipping agency founded in 1866, the conglomerate focuses on services for other businesses. Last year it acquired Pipeline Maintenance International to expand its ability to serve the energy industry. Still owned by descendants of the founder and managed by great-grandson John Denholm, the company posted sales of £176.4m in 2006.
