The company’s chairman, Thomas Dalrymple, left school at 16 and, in 1974, after working at Mackays Travel Agency in Edinburgh he formed the Globespan Group. In 2002, after suffering a long delay on a cheap flight from London to Scotland, Thomas set up Edinburgh’s first budget airline—Flyglobespan. It now operates flights to 23 destinations in Europe and North America from Scotland and England and is expanding its fleet to 21 aircraft. Last year, the operator says it flew more than 1.8m passengers, generating sales of £278.7m.
