The Imagination Group prides itself on being able to take on almost any conceivable communications assignment. The London-based design consultancy employs around 300 staff, including film producers, architects, photographers, technicians, and writers. This breadth of resource enables the company to produce anything from Andersen Consulting’s corporate brochures to a road show for the Spanish government promoting the privatisation of a bank. Profits have grown by 67% pa, from £1.5m in 1995 to £7.2m in 1998. Managing director Gary Withers, who founded The Imagination Group in 1978, attributes this success in part to a decision to ride out the recession in the early 1990s without cutting staff. For a period the company had to carry a high fixed cost base, but when the recession ended, it was in an excellent position to win contracts. Sales grew by 28% pa between 1995 and 1998 to reach £82.2m, while costs remained constant.
