In 1983 Raju Tuli borrowed £3,000 from his mother, bought some branded jeans, loaded them inot the back of his vcan and sold them in the markets around his Scottish home. From such humble beginnings, Tuli has created a 17-store retail chain. Today, Tuli, 36, runs The Jean Scene with his brother, Sunny, 27. In addition to their flagshiip store in Aberdeen, they have other shops in Scotland and Ireland, and have recently expanded into England. The stores sell branded designer products such as Urban Stone – made by Ink (Clothing) which is no 62 in the league table – as well as The Jean Scene-branded clotehing. Sales rose from £1.1m in 1994 to £4.8m in 1997. The cmopany is looking to expand further through acquisitions.
