Noting a lack of diversity in multiplex cinema offerings around Britain, Keith Pullinger, 59, and John Sullivan, 67, set up The Light in 2007. The duo pooled the experience they had gained while working as directors of Cineworld and Warner Village Cinema — now Vue — respectively, opening their first cinema in New Brighton in 2011. The business focuses on delivering a premium experience in venues with personality — its 10 cinemas have amenities such as licensed cafe-bars serving organic hotdogs, locally brewed beer, fresh coffee, spirits and ice cream. The Light venues also screen independent movies, live theatre and ballet performances, and foreign-language films popular with local minority groups. Sales climbed to £24.9m in the year to July, thanks to new sites in Stockport and Sheffield.
