The Range, which sells leisure, home and garden products, was — in line with government guidelines — able to keep its 180 UK stores open throughout the pandemic, with chief executive Alex Simpkin, 53, responding to criticism from some quarters by pointing out that its products such as pet food, hardware and household items constituted essential items. The Range was founded in 1989 by former market trader Chris Dawson, 68, who is chairman, and who, in 2019, transferred ownership to his wife, Sarah, who lives in Jersey. It has partnered with Iceland to sell frozen food from its larger outlets, and moved into a new £25m Plymouth headquarters last year.
