Chris Dawson has been described as “Plymouth’s deluxe Del Boy”, a reference to his past career that included market trading, motorbike racing and auctioneering. He opened the first CDS superstore, now branded The Range Home & Leisure, in 1989 and has seven other branches in the south of England that sell more than 67,000 products, all at knock-down prices. Store openings and buying in bulk have helped CDS Superstores grow profits 47% a year from £967,000 in 1999 to £3.1m in 2002. The company is planning to open more stores this year with the aim of making The Range a national chain.
