Cash-strapped Britons opting for “staycations” rather than flying abroad have helped Swift ride out the recession. Founded in 1965 as a touring-caravan manufacturer, the Yorkshire company is still making caravans today under the Sterling, Sprite, Challenger, Bessacarr and Swift brands, as well as four types of motorhome and a range of static holiday homes, priced at up to £70,000 for a luxury two-bedroom model. Sales grew to £192.8m in 2010 under Peter Smith, chairman and son of the founder.
