In 1972 Cumbrian farmers John and Barbara Dunning set up Tebay Services when the new M6 motorway was built across their land. Under the stewardship of their daughter Sarah Dunning, 46, the company expanded in 2014 and now includes the £40m, award-winning Gloucester Services and the Cairn Lodge Services near Glasgow. It also owns the Tebay Services Hotel and a visitor centre in Penrith. The business is still producing lamb and beef on the family farm, and works with local artisan and speciality food producers to supply its cafes, restaurants and farm shops. The new service stations helped profits rise to £6.8m in 2016.
