Founded as a Manchester shoe business by William Timpson in 1865, this company opened its 1,000th store in January, one of 125 outlets in Tesco supermarkets or their car parks. Under chairman John Timpson, 71, the great grandson of the founder, and his son James, 43, the chief executive, the company has moved into services such as key cutting, watch repairs and dry cleaning. It diversified further in 2013 with the acquisition of Snappy Snaps’ 120 shops for an undisclosed fee.
