This company’s original shop in Liverpool has been a prominent feature of the city centre since 1912. The value department store chain now trades from 49 sites across Britain, as well as from its website, selling everything from clothes and perfume to televisions and mattresses. The business was acquired by JJB Sports in 2002, before a £56m buyout backed by Silverfleet Capital in 2003. Sue Tennant, who became chief executive in 2007, has continued to grow the business, which achieved sales of £239.5m in 2008.
