This company’s original shop in Liverpool has been a prominent feature of the city centre since 1912. The chain now trades from 54 sites across Britain with a “lowest price in town” strategy, as well as from its website, selling everything from clothes and perfume to televisions and mattresses. The business was acquired by Silverfleet Capital in a £56m buyout in 2003. Sue Tennant, chief executive since 2007, oversaw sales of £266.7m in the year to January 2010.
