The scrap metal merchant Tom Martin was established in 1948 by German immigrant Arthur Hubert, who chose the company name for its unequivocal Englishness. Now, under the leadership of managing director George Brettle, this Preston company exports scrap metal to customers as far afield as Singapore and Japan. With more than 90 overseas customers, and plans to set up a plant in Poland, the company has seen international sales grow 41% a year from £13m in 2009 to an annualised £25.7m in 2011.
