Toppesfield specialises in surfacing projects, ranging from roads to sports stadiums and airports. Its recent projects include work at the junction of the M1, M6 and A14 and the link road from the A5 to the M1, work valued at about £10m. The company’s clients include Skanska, Amey, Kier and Balfour Beatty. Investment in staff, who now number more than 170, and new technology has helped the business almost quadruple sales over the past two years, to £75.1m this year. Toppesfield is majority-owned by Matthew Pryor, 49, who founded the company in 2004, with David Last, 56.
