Trailfinders expects its staff to have travelled independently for several months on several continents. Their knowledge is one of the reasons the company has become one of Britain’s most popular independent travel agents. It was founded in 1970 by Mike Gooley after he left the SAS, and initially depended on postal bookings, almost failing to get off the ground when its launch coincided with a four-month postal strike. Now most of Trailfinders’ sales, which totalled £468m in the year to February 2004, come through telephone bookings.
