TransferWise’s currency exchange platform bypasses the traditional international bank-payments system to charge lower fees to its 6m customers, who transfer £4bn a month. Last year’s overseas sales hit £132.5m under Estonian co-founders Taavet Hinrikus, 38, and Kristo Käärmann, 39, who sold some of their shares in a £230m funding round in May, valuing the firm at £2.4bn. The company has since secured banking partnerships in America and a licence to operate in the UAE.
