This virtual travel agency, based in Bolton, makes it on to the Fast Track 100 league table for the third year running, having increased sales by 78% a year, from £4.7m in 1996 to £26.6m in 1999. David Speakman (pictured below) says Travel Counsellors is now committing itself lock, stock and barrel to an internet-based sales strategy. It closed its last high-street outlet this year and three-quarters of staff are home workers. Founded in 1991, the company has also shifted focus towards the lucrative business-travel market. Many large companies outsource their business travel needs to an ‘implant’ agency that sets up offices in a client’s headquarters. Travel Counsellors is reversing this by developing the concept of ‘outplants’, groups of three or four home counsellors dedicated to individual corporate accounts. The head office in Bolton incorporates a VIP suite for local customers to relax in and a beauty spa for administrative staff.
