Opening its first hotel in 1985 in Staffordshire, the Oxfordshire-based Travelodge chain now operates more than 590 hotels in the UK, Ireland and Spain. Lockdown forced most to close from March, but some remained open to support NHS staff and key workers. More than 8,000 staff were furloughed before reopening began in July with extra safety measures in place. Under chief executive Peter Gowers, 47, the company agreed temporary rent reductions in June and secured £100m of new funding to help position itself for recovery.
