Travelsphere, based in Leicestershire, claims to be the largest independent travel company in the UK, and last year took 240,000 people to 60 countries around the world. Unlike many smaller operators, who have traditionally had to sell through travel agents, it sells its holidays direct to customers by telephone, cutting out commission payments. The company was founded in 1977 by Bruce Wake, Michael Edwards and Richard Mackay and has seen its profits grow by 36% pa, from £3.3m in 1996 to £8.4m in 1999. The acquisition of Edinburgh-based Blue Chip Travel in 1997 helped boost sales by 15% pa to £82.6m in 1999. The purchase also widened Travelsphere’s range of distribution outlets and products.
