TVR Engineering was founded in 1947 by engineer Trevor Wilkinson. It is now one the UK’s largest private car manufacturers, with sales in 1998 of its Chimaera, Griffith and Cerbera sports cars standing at 2,000. TVR competes in the luxury car market against BMW, Porsche and Ferrari, but offers sports car performance at an average price of just £40,000. Blackpool-based TVR has driven up profits by 55% pa, from £1.4m in 1995 to £5.3m in 1998. In the same period sales have increased by 25% pa, to £51.5m. The company has exploited a growth in the market for two-seater sportsters by designing cars that offer performance and comfort. They sell to a new market of doctors, dentists and entrepreneurs. Chairman Peter Wheeler bought TVR in 1982 with savings derived from his previous career in the chemicals industry.
