Brothers Darren and Noel McKee joined their father’s Rochdale car dealership in the late 1980s straight from school. After learning the business the hard way on the forecourt, they eventually bought out their father in a £50m deal in 1998 supported by Royal Bank of Scotland. The brothers, both still in their early thirties, have developed the business into one of the country’s largest car hypermarkets, offering a one-stop shop for used-car buyers. Profits have grown 57% a year from an annualised £7.1m in 1998 to £27.2m in 2001. The company’s growth has meant that Darren can also afford the best. He drives a Porsche 911 during the week and a Ferrari 360 at the weekend.
