Besides making some of Europe’s most popular biscuits such as McVitie’s Hobnobs and Jaffa Cakes, United Biscuits also produces a host of savoury snacks such as Hula Hoops, KP salted peanuts and McCoys crisps. These brands earned total operating profits, including amortisation and exceptionals, of £37m on sales of £1.3bn in 2001 when the west London-based company had 11,600 employees. Operating profit excluding amortisation and exceptionals, a measure preferred by the company, was £114m in 2001. United Biscuits was acquired for £1.3bn in 2000 by the Finalrealm consortium of investors that included Cinven, Paribas Affaires Industrielle, DB Capital and US biscuit maker Nabisco.
