Long experience in the energy sector gave Phillip Kane, 38, Ross Taylor, 35, and Mohammad Hafeez, 50, the confidence to start their own energy company to take on the big six. Leeds-based United Gas & Power, launched in 2013, supplies only business customers and counts Harrods Estates, Ei Group and the charity Age UK among its clients, as well as Leeds Rhinos’ rugby stadium. It says that since June 2018, the electricity it sells has been from renewable sources, including hydro, wind, solar and biomass, helping sales hit £23.2m this year. Inspired by feedback from a customer survey, the company is launching a new service for business clients such as hotels: electric car-charging points they can in turn offer their customers.
