David Linton, an Australian, financed his engineering degree at King’s College, London through private share dealing. After graduating, he launched UPDATA Software in 1991 to sell the type of information that had made his amateur trading successful. He developed a user-friendly software package that tracks share prices and gives historical data on companies listed on the stock market. For an annual fee of £1,000, Updata offers the information to small traders.
Its sales have increased 105% a year, from £382,000 in 1998 to £1.6m in 2000.
