South African private equity firm Brait acquired an 80% stake in this health club operator in 2015 from CVC Capital Partners, with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group cutting its stake to 20% in a deal that valued Virgin Active at £1.3bn. It now has 233 clubs in eight countries across four continents and more than 1.1m members. The London-based firm is led by founder and group chief executive Matthew Bucknall, 58.
