Part of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, Virgin Active operates 193 health clubs—91 in South Africa, 71 in Britain and the others spread across Italy, Spain and Portugal. In 2006, Virgin Active bought the gym chain Holmes Place from Permira and Bridgepoint, which both retained minority stakes in the business. The deal was led by chief executive Matthew Bucknall, and it is said to be interested in a flotation. Sales reached £391m in 2009.
