Since taking over the West Coast rail franchise 14 years ago, Virgin Trains has replaced its entire fleet and more than doubled passenger numbers each year from 14m to 30m. As part of a deal with the government to extend the company’s West Coast franchise to the end of this year, Virgin is adding more than 100 train carriages, increasing the number of standard seats by 40%. Under chief executive Tony Collins the Birmingham company reported sales of £798m in 2011.
