Charles Sharland, a former Hewlett-Packard salesman, sold his prized collection of motorbikes to start Vistorm in 1991. The company began as a computer reseller but now focuses on developing software and infrastructure for IT security. Its sales have increased 79% a year, from £5.6m in 1998 to £17.8m in 2000, when it made large losses. It raised £25m in venture capital last year from a group of investors led by 3i.
