Tech Track 100

“If Vocality equipment fails, lives are lost,” says Julian Bashford, who co-founded Vocality with Martin Saunders in 1999. The Surrey company has developed a system that links satellite and terrestrial communications in a portable format. Vocality supplies armed forces in Europe and America as well as news organisations such as NBC. During the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, Vocality’s system enabled journalists to broadcast live from the war zones. The company’s sales grew 98% a year from an annualised £555,000 in 2000 to £2.2m in 2002.
