Rail tracks warping in the summer sun and a surge in rail infrastructure repairs since the Hatfield crash have ensured a busy time for WA Developments. Founded by Andrew Tinkler in 1987 with only £500, it specialises in railway engineering and repairs, from strengthening embankments to repairing bridges and tunnels. Most of the Cumbria company’s work is carried out in the north under contracts for Nuttalls, May Gurney, Network Rail, Carillion Rail and Jarvis. Sales have grown almost 89% a year from £3.1m in 1999 to £21m in 2002.
