One of Britain’s four regulated gas-distribution firms, Wales & West Utilities operates 34,000km of pipes, bringing gas to homes and businesses from North Wales to Cornwall, a catchment area with 7.4m residents. The Newport company, with close to 1,300 staff, was spun out of National Grid Transco in 2005 in a £1.2 billion deal backed by Macquarie. The firm posted sales of £233.8m in 2007.
