The pandemic forced Walkers Shortbread to suspend production in March, but its staff remained on full pay and it was able to reopen in April after making changes to protect workers. As well as shortbread, the family firm makes oatcakes, cakes, biscuits and tarts in its six Scottish factories. It dates back to 1898 and is run by joint managing directors Joseph and Jim Walker, 82 and 76. Sales in 2018 were £147m, with exports accounting for nearly half.
