Warburtons is famous for its sliced bread wrapped in waxy paper and its slogan “bakers born and bred”. The Bolton group, which was founded in 1876, has steadily expanded its range to include wholemeal loaves, seeded rolls and crumpets. As a well-known brand in northern England, the company has, in recent years, been looking to raise its profile in the south and has opened bakeries in Bristol and London. Chairman Jonathan Warburton is the fifth generation of his family to run the business. Sales reached £510.5m in 2009.
