In 1975 Vijay Patel opened a pharmacy in Essex, after arriving from Kenya with £5. Vijay’s brother Bhikhu joined soon after and they have built up one of Britain’s largest independent pharmaceutical companies. A new division, Amdipharm, was formed in 2003 to drive international expansion and the company’s products are on sale in more than 100 countries. In 2007 sales were £297.3m.
