Thirsty Liverpool clubbers have helped to drive the growth of Welch’s of Wirral, a Merseyside drinks wholesaler. The firm sells drinks to nightclubs that attract thousands of ravers. The company, founded in 1997 by Jim Welch, is now mainly run by his son, also called Jim. It makes deliveries 18 hours a day, seven days a week to more than 800 off-licences, bars, clubs, hotels and restaurants. Sales have grown 126% a year from an annualised £271,000 in 1998 to £3.1m in 2001, when the company employed 13 people.
