Welcome Break’s service stations are a familiar sight to motorway drivers, offering food, cash and hotel rooms. The company was acquired from Granada in 1997 by Investcorp, a Bahraini private-equity firm. Welcome Break Finance, the financing arm of the company, has hit trouble and may be put into administration, although Investcorp has stressed that Welcome Break’s operations are secure. Welcome Break reported a drop in operating profits from £28m to £3m on sales of £548m in 2002, which remain the latest available figures.
