A familiar sight on Britain’s motorways for more than 50 years, Welcome Break has 28 service areas housing the company’s own brands alongside high street names such as Burger King, KFC, Starbucks, Waitrose and WH Smith. A consortium of infrastructure investors including NIBC, ING and Challenger, bought the company in 2008 for an undisclosed sum from Investcorp, the private equity firm. Last summer, the Milton Keynes company said it was installing Britain’s first national charging point network for electric cars. Under chief executive Rod McKie, sales reached £632m in the year to January.
