A familiar name to motorists, the Welcome Break service-station chain says it attracts more than 80m visitors a year to its 24-hour facilities. The Milton Keynes firm has upgraded its sites in recent years and has franchises such as Burger King, KFC and Coffee Primo. Those investments helped to boost sales to £616m in 2005. The company was bought from Granada in 1997 by the Bahrain private-equity firm Investcorp and is now headed by chief executive Rod McKie, who took the reins last November.
