Pasties were once regarded as nothing more than a nutritious snack for Cornish miners. But today West Cornwall Pasty Co has 34 branches, mainly in England, and sells 6m pasties a year, including non-traditional fillings such as chicken balti and turkey with cranberry. Brothers Gavin and Arron Cocking founded the company in 1998 with childhood friend Mark Christophers, who previously worked for NatWest Ventures. The company decorates its stores with hand-painted murals, and its sales have grown 87% a year from £1.2m in 2000 to £7.6m in 2003.
