Bad weather, remote locations and rugged terrain all pose difficulties for radio communications. Westica’s flagship 1.4 GHz transmitter claims to surmount all these, which is why the vast majority of police and fire services in Britain are customers, according to chief executive Andrew Hunwicks.
The company is currently testing broadband in rural areas and developing a range of transmitters that work on other frequencies.
Sales have grown 75% a year from £675,000 in 2001 to £2.1m in 2003.
