Despite a policy of offering the lowest possible prices, Wilkinson Hardware Stores still managed to make a £57m profit on sales of £1,045m in the year to January 2004. Tony Wilkinson chairs the family business, which was founded in Leicester in 1930. Its 232 home and garden stores have benefited from booming interest in home improvement and gardening, and sales have risen by about £100m in each of the past five years.
