Nineteen year old Mark Dobson came up with the idea for his business after hearing his dad complain about the lack of security at London Underground, where he worked as a builder. Teaming up with an ex-army partner, Garry Sullivan, the pair talked both the London Transport and the Underground into hiring them – launching Wilson James in 1991. Since then, the Essex-based company has expanded operations to offer full facilities management including providing security staff, fire marshals, and welfare attendees. Clients include Heathrow Airport, the Tate Gallery, the Royal Court Theatre, British Airways, and Rothschilds. Sales at this 24-hour service have grown from £476,000 in 1994 to £6.1m in 1997.
