For 22 years, Fred Wilde’s coach company ran tours and charters. His son Kevin set his sights higher on joining the family business and, in 1999, secured a £1m contract from Transport for London to run a bus route in Mitcham. Now the company has five such routes and also provides transport for Kingston borough council. These have helped drive up sales 86% a year from £843,000 in 1998 to £5.4m in 2001, when the company employed 167 staff.
