Inexorable demand for new homes combined with tight planning controls has opened up a niche for this company. Founded in 1993 by the geologist Stephen Daubney, Woodford buys contaminated sites and puts its scientists and engineers to work cleaning them up. It then sells them on to developers such as Miller Homes and Persimmon. Working on 10 to 12 sites a year, mostly in northern England and the Midlands, it has pushed up sales 91% a year, from £4.8m in 2001 to an annualised £33.1m in 2004.
