The problems of using American mobile phones in Britain created an opportunity for Clive Drake, a former mobile-phone dealer. In 1993 Drake set up Worldroam, then trading as Rent-A-Phone, to cater for transatlantic travellers who needed temporary use of a phone. The company has contracts with Vodafone in Britain, and American Express and Verizon in America, which it supplies with Blackberry handsets, GPRS and satellite phones from a stockpile of 19,500 devices. Sales at the Essex firm have grown 63% a year from £2.5m in 2000 to £10.8m in 2003. It expects to open an office in America early next year.
