Chairman Robert Essex founded Writtle in 2004 to acquire a group of media and branding companies. The company has grown to almost 20 agencies, with expertise in PR, digital communications, retail design and strategy. The latest acquisition is Loewy, a loss-making marketing services group that was owned by Veronis Suhler Stevenson and Abry Partners. These two investors now hold a combined 30% stake in Writtle Holdings after a £4.5m fundraising that formed part of the 2011 Loewy acquisition. International sales have grown 243% a year, from £533,000 in 2009 to £6.3m in 2011, helped in part by two of its subsidiaries setting up joint operations in Hong Kong last year.
