This Reading firm, which has produced the Yellow Pages business directories since 1966, was sold by BT to the private-equity firms Apax Partners and Hicks, Muse, Tate and Furst for £2.1 billion in 2001. Yell has expanded by acquisition in America and now has a presence in 41 states. Its backers are looking to float the company as soon as stock markets permit. Yell reported sales of £865m and an operating profit of £152m in 2002.
