Z-Tech designs systems that can monitor and control industrial processes for customers such as Thames Water, the Royal Air Force and Glaxo Smith Kline. In one project the company designed an emergency shutdown system for an incineration plant. Michael Swinhoe, the founder, says he raised start-up funding of £20,000 by selling his motorbike and “a few other toys”. The company’s sales have risen 114% a year from an annualised £219,000 in 2001 to £1m in 2003.
